Installation of a siphon

Any sink is always supplemented with a siphon, which ensures water purification and draining it into the sewer. The device easily blocks gases and unpleasant odors, preventing them from entering the room. In other words, it is a hydraulic valve, its location and dimensions do not make much difference, since the siphon under the sink in the kitchen is installed in places with sufficient space. Installation of a siphon can be done with your own hands, knowing some features.

Types of siphons

There are several types of siphons, which have their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. The most popular type is the bottle type. Visually, it is similar to an ordinary bottle, hence the name.

Structurally, this is the most complex model compared to others, but it has a number of advantages:

  • compact dimensions that allow you to install it under the sink with minimal space;
  • ease of installation, assembly and disassembly for maintenance;
  • if foreign objects accidentally fall into the drain, they do not flow into the sewer, but settle at the bottom of the flask;
  • it is possible to connect an overflow for the sink, as well as other equipment in the form of a washing machine or dishwasher.

A significant drawback is the accumulation of dirt in the flask. There are many options for designing the bottle type, one of them is the hidden type. In this case, the glass is installed in the wall, and only the tube comes out. The device is rarely used in practice and is quite expensive.

Such a popular type is tubular and corrugated. The tubular structure includes a rigid tube that visually has an “S” or “U” shape. Structurally, the equipment may or may not be disassembled.

Some models have a plug at the bottom that opens from time to time to clean the drain. Due to the rigidity, it is necessary to strictly follow the installation rules, and the drain of the sink and the entrance to the sewer must be combined as tightly as possible.

Corrugated options are more practical, if necessary, they can be bent into a convenient position, which is important for a complex method of connecting to the sewer. There are no intermediate connections in the device, so the probability of leakage is reduced. The slope is made mechanically by bending the tube. Installation and assembly is simple, which is an advantage. The main disadvantage is the accumulation of deposits in the flexible hose, which must be cleaned from time to time.

Among other types, the following are distinguished:

  • flat – a standard design, but all its parts have a horizontal arrangement. Suitable for installation under the sink with a lack of free space;
  • siphon with jet break – differs from the standard version by a small clearance of up to 3 cm, which is installed between the outlet and intake opening. Due to this, germs and other garbage cannot get into the sink from the sewer pipe. Similar types are often used in catering establishments.

The standard equipment includes the following parts:

  • a metal grate under the drain, traps garbage and other large particles;
  • a set of rubber pads of various shapes and thicknesses. In more expensive equipment, they will be white;
  • water outlet nozzle with relief rings. Some models are equipped with layers for additional installation of a washing machine or dishwasher;
  • screws for connecting the siphon and the grid, it is recommended to choose an element made of stainless steel;
  • corps;
  • nuts;
  • pipes for connection to the sewage system.

The entire structure and materials must be resistant to the effects of chemicals and high temperatures.

Plastic models have a low cost, they are easy to assemble.

Polypropylene products are characterized by increased rigidity, so they retain their shape, and the fastening is more reliable.

Stainless steel options are expensive, rarely used, but suitable for kitchens where there is no cabinet under the sink. It is recommended to choose bronze or brass parts with an additional coating to prevent corrosion and oxidation.

Choice of siphon

When choosing a siphon for the kitchen, you need to consider several important factors. Be sure to pay attention to the following parameters before purchasing:

  • the cost of the product does not depend on the quality of work, but indicates the approximate life of the product. The more expensive the part, the longer it will last, in addition, the price depends on the materials used to make the device;
  • aesthetics is an important parameter for sinks without pedestals, when the entire space is visible. In this case, choose a chrome siphon to create the desired impression, and if there is a cabinet, then use any type;
  • type of plumbing – siphons of any type are bought for a standard sink, and there are no difficulties with the choice, but if the sink is made to order, it has non-standard dimensions, then it is better to use corrugated or bottle types. Rigid pipe models are suitable for standard kitchen sinks;
  • the volume of water depends on the planned passage of water through the sink. For frequent works, it is necessary to select pipes with an increased diameter, otherwise liquid may spill into the room, which leads to flooding;
  • the presence of an overflow – will prevent the kitchen from flooding;
  • the diameter of the sink and sewer drain — if the values do not match the standard ones, you should additionally purchase adapters.
  • additional drain — used if it is planned to connect equipment.

You can always buy siphons cheaper and structurally simple, but they can quickly clog, leak or fail for other reasons. All this causes large costs, so it is better to immediately calculate all the features of the kitchen remodeling, additional equipment and choose a quality product.

Preparatory work for installation

Before starting assembly and installation, it is necessary to check that all the necessary parts from the kit are available. If the work is done with your own hands, you should prepare a tool. In addition, it is necessary to dismantle the old siphon, the work should be carried out carefully so as not to damage the sink itself, the faucet and other parts.

Before dismantling, it is recommended to put a bucket or basin under the sink to drain the remaining water and dirt.

Old equipment is fastened with a bolt, it often sours, and it will be difficult to unscrew it with a screwdriver. A screwdriver with a nozzle can come to the rescue. If the siphon is without a bolt, or more precisely, there is no notch or it has worn off, then you should simply cut the drain net. Pliers, metal scissors and other devices are suitable for work.

After dismantling, everything is removed, the sink is completely wiped from dirt and water residues. Be sure to disconnect the device from the sewer. The problem may be with the sealing rubber, which makes it difficult to remove the tube.

If a major repair is carried out in the kitchen, all plumbing is replaced with a new one, then there will be no dismantling. In this case, you just need to install a siphon on the new sink, after its preliminary assembly.

Siphon assembly

It is difficult to correctly mount the siphon under the sink without its preliminary assembly. For any kind, you need to use the instructions, since there may be some changes in the process constructively. In general, the procedure looks like this:

  1. A flat gasket is placed on the largest part of the flask, and a cap is screwed on the side.
  2. A nut is screwed onto the pipe, after which a cone-shaped gasket is put on with the blunt end up. The device is inserted at the top of the siphon into the hole, pressed quite tightly, but with moderate force, and the nut is tightened.
  3. If a siphon with an overflow is used, it must be connected to the outlet pipe. To do this, the nut is first screwed on, then a conical gasket is placed with the blunt end to the overflow. The structure is inserted into the lead and clamped.
  4. By analogy with point 3, you need to put a nut and a gasket on the flexible hose, screw it to the siphon and finish the assembly.

During assembly, monitor the location of the gaskets, as well as tighten the nuts moderately so as not to break the thread and not to compress the rubber bands.

Siphon installation scheme

The correct installation for some types of siphons will differ. For reliable installation, you need to know several features.

Installation of a standard siphon

After assembling the device, the connection is made, and the installation scheme for standard types is as follows:

  1. The grooved sealing ring is applied to the siphon nozzle with the strips facing upwards.
  2. The grate itself with a gasket is placed on top of the kitchen sink, a siphon is placed below the drain. Holding both parts, they must be aligned.
  3. Screw the screw into the grid.
  4. Now you need to connect the siphon to the sewer, using a corrugated or rigid tube. The corrugated product will be easier to install, it stretches to the desired length, but so that there is no tension. A rigid pipe is more reliable and durable, but installation is more difficult.

Corrugations for sewer connection can be prefabricated, and the connection is made using gaskets and fittings.

If the length of the pipe is too long, and the structure itself is smooth, then the excess is easily removed with a hacksaw.

The pipe itself is inserted into the sewer drain through a sealing ring in the form of a rubber gasket. Lubricant in the form of a detergent will help to simplify the connection. It is enough to pour a few drops and distribute a thin layer so that the tube enters the adapter more easily.

It is much easier to install the siphon on the removed sink, and after installation and connection, check the structure by turning on the water. When the hydraulic valve is filled with liquid, there should be no leakage. In this case, the installation and assembly is done correctly.

Installation of a double siphon

In some cases, it is necessary to use a double siphon, which is on 1 or 2 levels. Such equipment has a flask for settling the liquid. A device for double sinks is placed on the side or in the center between them.

The 1-level system provides a connection immediately under the sink section, the tube that departs from the siphon is attached at an angle to the drain for the second sink.

The 2-level device includes pipes that connect directly to each sink drain and are connected by a single bulb. Overflow is often used in double views, and correct installation and connection requires certain knowledge due to the large number of additional elements:

  1. A grate must be screwed to each drain.
  2. Pipes are connected to the drains with the help of nuts.
  3. A flask for settling water is attached to the connecting pipe. Rubber seals and screws from the set are used for installation. Silicone treatment will increase reliability and tightness.
  4. The outlet pipe is installed in the sewer.

The assembled device is checked for leaks.

Installation of a siphon for small sinks

Mini-sinks are often placed in kitchens if the area of the room is small. Such sanitary ware, despite its size, is quite convenient, functional and looks beautiful, fitting into any style.

For a small sink, you need to choose small siphons so that the overall look is not spoiled, especially if there is no cabinet under the sink. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account the quality of the product, but the assembly itself has no special features and is carried out according to a standard scheme.

To attach a small siphon to a mini-sink, you need to be extremely careful, because you need to work with small dimensions in a limited space. All fasteners and joints are recommended to be additionally covered with sealant.

Care of the siphon

The siphon in the kitchen needs constant care, because not only water, but also food residues and other garbage get into it. To increase the intervals between cleanings, a mesh is used, additionally, you can install a waste shredder, which will prevent large particles from entering the drain.

The cleaning process itself depends on the design features. For the corrugated type, you need to disassemble the device, and the bottle type can be pierced with a tube.

Advertisements offer chemical cleaning agents, but they should be used with caution if the elements are made of plastic. If a siphon is installed under a large neck, it is advisable to use kitchen rugs that will break through blockages.

Siphons for sinks are simple devices, with a light design and a simple process of assembly, installation and connection to the sewage system. Do-it-yourself work requires a minimal set of tools. For a long service life, the choice of plumbing element should be approached with all care, taking into account that the device is used in the kitchen.
